Many people decide upon Rome or Florence is their city choice for a short break in Italy, and whilst both of the cities offer an excellent experience, especially when coupled with an inexpensive hire car from one of the major European rental companies such as Hertz, Avis, Budget or Europacar, there are also some great cities further south which are often overlooked. One such city is Naples, most well-known for its art, culture and cuisine. By deciding upon the Naples as your base from which to explore Southern Italy, you will have access to a host of attractions and sights which would not be possible to visit if you're staying further north in Rome or Florence. Naples International Airport can be found in the suburbs of the city, and makes an excellent pickup place for your hire car.

One of the more intriguing places that are within a short drive from Naples is Mount Vesuvius, this dormant volcano caused the destruction of Pompeii in 79 A.D. for slightly more relaxing trip a visit to the popular coastal resort town of Sorrento, with its charming fishing village atmosphere, meandering back streets and lazy pavement cafés is sure to please. A more historically important coastal town is Castellammare di Stabia, complete with a well preserved castle and a profusion of renowned seafood restaurants. All in all Naples makes an excellent city from which to explore Southern Italy, a little more off the beaten track than either Rome or Florence, yet in some ways more rewarding.
